Needle play is considered to be edge play for a lot of reasons. One is that blood and open wounds are involved. Needle play can also be done in a very aesthetic way. The needles can be arranged on each side of the spine and then you tie a string between them. This creates a needle corset which looks very pretty. This picture depicts such a corset, even though this seems to be either manipulated or made from piercings.
Either way, the picture is very classic and aesthetic. The pose accentuates the corset and the minimal colour scale makes the string really stand out against her back.
