To my mind, competition is part of human nature. There is something in us that drives us to be best at something. If in the BDSM community, there are competitions (and I've not explored this but it makes sense), then those that wish to improve, are social animals and want company, or just want to see what's out there, will attend.

So, as to the title of this article: Is BDSM a Competition? I'd have to say 'no'. It's my understanding that it is a form of a relationship. In some relationships there will always be competition. That too is part of human nature and how some people are made.

Again, thank you for the article. I'd no idea that things like this existed.

BRAVO! I agree with nearly everything you said.
Now with that being said, here is the one that I do have a little problem with: I was merely using the competitions for demonstration purposes in order to show that there is an ingrained spirit of competiveness in the BDSM lifestyle. The purpose of competiveness versus just exhibitionism is to get chosen. Even in some of our most celebrated BDSM novels such as The Marketplace series or The Beauty series there are competitions taking place in order for one or more someones to be chosen by a particular someone/s else. Again, the point of competition is not only to draw attention to oneself, but to stick out so that you will be the one chosen. (Sly smile: Bondage Awards anyone?)
