And a question I am interested to read you answer to in the comments. Why do fetish and BDSM belong together – or – why do fetish and BDSM not belong together?

They only belong together in the same way that leather and homosexuality do, or lingerie and heterosexuality do. Fetish and BDSM are expressions under that immense complex catehory of behaviors related to human mating, and erotic and sexual play. In some cultures, at some times, there was a perceived link between leather fetish gear and homosexuality; but leather is just as appealing to heterosexual leather wearers. The same with lingerie and heterosexual gender roles; but gay and lesbian and othersexed people who may have non conformist gender roles can like lingerie also. One can practice serious BDSM without any latex leather or lingerie. And one can be a fetishist without any real interest or participation in Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sado Masochism.
On the other hand – both fetishism and BDSM tend to encourage some awareness of one’s erotic triggers. (I would say that BDSM requires conscious awareness of it, for oneself and one’s playmates.) Both are exhibitionistic and dramatic; one makes a show, for one’s self, partners and/or possibly an audience. Both fetishism and BDSM appreciate that erotic experience is complex, built of conscious and unconscious layers. Both BDSM and fetishism appreciate that tastes vary, and that individual likes and dislikes are not so much chosen as discovered.
